Thambale Puddi ~ Roasted Coconut Chutney Powder - Step by Step Recipe

There are a few things, despite learning to make myself,I feel I like it only if amma makes it!!Thambale Puddi is one of them.I’ve made it once but I definitely feel it came nowhere close to how amma made it.Whenever I am in Ekm amma makes a big batch and packs it for me.It lasts me till my next visit to Ekm or my parents’ next visit to Chennai.I feel it is almost like a side-dish.I can have it by itself when I badly feel like snacking or pair it with rice and dali thoy.It tastes great when mixed in pej/kanji too.

Dried coconut/Copra is used to make thambale puddi,(which if translated means-Chutney powder.)and that is what which assures its long shelf life.I guess just like Soi bhajil masol, this one too can be made with dessicated coconut powder,I haven’t tried, but it might work after all..!!

Recipe Marathon - Day 17

Thambale Puddi ~ Roasted coconut chutney powder

Ingredients

Dried coconut/Copra – 2,grated
Red chillies – 24 ( 12 each for 1 coconut)
Coriander – 5 tbsp
Curry leaves – 10 sprigs
Channa dal – 250 gms
Urad dal – 250 gms
Tamarind – 1 big lime size
Salt to taste

Method

In a kadai, dry fry grated coconut, red chillies, coriander and curry leaves till the coconut becomes light brown in colour. After this point, keep stirring the mix till it becomes evenly brown in colour, keep aside.
In another kadai, dry fry channa dal till brown, keep aside. In the same kadai, dry fry urad dal till brown, keep aside. Again dry fry tamarind with salt, keep aside.
First powder the channa dal and urad dal, keep aside. Powder the coconut-red chilly-coriander mix till it oozes oil.(DO NOT ADD WATER).Add the salt-tamarind mix to it and powder again, now the oil will reduce and the mix will resemble a lump. Transfer the contents to a plate.
Little by little, mix the coconut mix and the powdered dals together.(you could use a mixer for better results). Store in dry air-tight bottles and serve
